Common Ground – Galeria Podbrzezie

Wystawa przybliża współczesną fotografię niemiecką przez pryzmat książki fotograficznej, sytuując te prace w szerszym dialogu między Niemcami a Polską. Fotografia w obu krajach rozwijała się w powiązanych ze sobą europejskich kontekstach artystycznych, politycznych i społecznych. Common Ground stawia tezę, że aby zrozumieć siebie nawzajem i otaczającą nas rzeczywistość, musimy zmierzyć się z pytaniami — o tożsamość, pamięć, krajobraz i przemiany.

Książki przekraczają granice łatwiej niż ludzie i zawsze pełniły rolę nośników dialogu oraz nowych języków wizualnych. Książki fotograficzne zajmują wyjątkowe miejsce w historii praktyki fotograficznej jako skonstruowane narracje wizualne, w których sekwencja, rytm, materialność i forma kształtują znaczenie. Od początku XX wieku książka fotograficzna funkcjonuje jako jedno z najbardziej wpływowych mediów prezentacji i obiegu fotografii — pozwalając osobom artystycznym tworzyć eseje wizualne, dokumentować rzeczywistość społeczną i eksperymentować z formą w sposób zasadniczo różniący się od wystaw czy pojedynczych odbitek.

Common Ground traktuje książkę jako obiekt artystyczny — miejsce spotkania historycznej rzeczywistości z wewnętrznym przeżyciem, gdzie kulturowe aspekty układają się w nieoczekiwane wzory tworząc zarówno podobieństwa, jak i różnice. Wystawa staje się więc platformą dyskusji, współpracy i zaangażowania w fotografię jako praktykę artystyczną i formę wymiany kulturowej — w czasach, gdy może być nam ona najbardziej potrzebna.

The exhibition explores contemporary German photography through the lens of the photobook, situating these works within a broader dialogue between Germany and Poland. Photography in both countries has developed within interconnected European artistic, political, and social contexts. At its core, Common Ground argues that to share an understanding of each other and our material reality, we must engage with questions of identity, memory, landscape, and transformation.

Books travel across borders more easily than humans, and have historically served as vehicles for artistic dialogue and the dissemination of new visual languages. Photography books occupy a unique position within the history of photographic practice. More than containers of images, they are curated visual narratives in which sequencing, rhythm, materiality, and design shape meaning. Since the early twentieth century, the photobook has functioned as one of the most influential mediums for presenting and circulating photography — allowing artists to construct visual essays, document social realities, and experiment with form in ways that differ fundamentally from exhibitions or single prints.

Common Ground treats the book as an artistic object in its own right — a site of encounter between historical reality and the inner subjective world, between cultural aspects that arrange themselves in unusual patterns, creating both similarities and differences. Ultimately, the exhibition aims to create a platform for discussion, collaboration, and renewed engagement with photography as both an artistic practice and a form of cultural exchange — in times when we may need it the most.
